SLPN SPORTS - Oilers (3-2) @ Looters (4-1) PREVIEW
Rob Matthews: We a day we have here, on SLPN Sports, Louisiana State Division III football! We're doing a quick run-through of the Saturday games ahead, telling you which are the barn-burners and which will be sleeper hits. We'll be covering the center ring game of the day, Golden Meadow against Avondale, later in the program. For now, Tank McNamara and I focus on Hathian, where it's once again a real crawfish boil down at newly refurbished Seaside Stadium. The sleepers of the season, the Columtreal Looters, are tangling with the Fletcher Tech Oilers. This is the Looters second home game, and they proved an underdog last time. Will they pull it off this time against the high-flying Oilers, Tank?
Tank McNamara: My money is that they will, Rob, but it won't be easy. It's tough sledding against an Oilers defense that leads the league in yards allowed against the running back. The Looters main weapon is their ground game. They use it to control the tempo of the game and take pressure off quarterback, Jason Keaton. Today, they'll be running into a brick wall. The defensive line Fletcher Tech fields is league-champ material, all four of them.
RM: And word has it that the Looters have a man down in their backfield: Michiaki Yamaguchi, who's becoming somewhat of a freshman superstar, has a fractured arm.
TM: Oh, he'll play. The Machine will play. Wheels falling off, headlight out; it don't matter. If I know Yamaguchi, he'll find a way to carry the rock, even if it's with one arm in a cast. But he won't be 100%, and that'll hurt the Looters. Seth Corbin, their Kicker, is also knocked around. Might even be out of commission. So that's two of the top elements of the Looters' play who are running on empty. Their field position and their ground game are keystones, and they're cracked. And guess what?
RM: What, Tank?
TM: On top of it all, they have a new coach. This is Hendrich Andel who, like your ol' Tank here, enjoys the distinction of being a Defensive MVP. Andel's a ball-buster. A bruiser. A feared man. Used to even be Chief of Police down in Hathian. A lion among the wolves. He'll fit in with the Looters' love of smashmouth balling just fine. But this is his first week. It's hard to take the wheel when the truck's going 90 miles per hour, you know what I mean?
RM: Of course. They've got a lot of new talent, too.
TM: Right. New techniques and new talent - the Looters are trying to get their car tuned up while it's already on the race track. Sure, they got some good new parts to add. There's a fresh pair of wideouts - Scott Andel, the Coach's son, who has a heck of a set of hands; and Leon Acosta, who's got feet as fleet as it gts. If both of these guys was one receiver, the Looters could throw it anywhere on the field and they'd land it. As it is, they're fierce competitors individually, who've soon a devotion to the squad from day one. They have this Garrett Zero kid at Safety. You seen this kid? I don't even mean seen the tape - I mean seen a picture of the guy. He looks like somebody put a pretty boy through a meat grinder. He's tough as Birmingham boot leather. Then there's Angel Pena. He's former Air Force. Another tough guy, who looks to be faster than an F-14. Lastly, oh boy, there's the new cornerback. Nick O'Connell. I do not know what bean field they plucked this dude from, but he's tall as they come. Tall, but doesn't seem to even know the game, let alone the system. I follow his Twitter, and it seems like they have him watching Hollywood movies about football to train him up.
RM: They do things their own way down in Columtreal.
TM: That they do. That they do. Fortunately, they have the two strong captains to see them through. Keaton's still running this offense, and his clear-headed play has carried the day on many an occasion. He's got a passing accuracy that's among Division leaders. Joshua Andrew-Parker is still a chief of beasts. Behind his command, he's got monsters like Omizu and Samson. He's got a brutal style of blitzing that sends men at the opposing ball-carrier from the edges and right up the A-gap. He's got heart to spare and plays every defensive snap. So the Looters have the components. Question is, do they have the health? Do they have cohesion? Can they do it against the Oilers?
RM: Considering the Oilers have Lenny Glover, Unlucky 13, who is a bad day for every opposing defense. His brilliance with Option play will have Andrew-Parker's squad's heads spinning. This is a one-man game winner. So if the Looters have a chance to loose, Unlucky Lenny can make it happen. We'll see today, at 2pm SLT, on SLPN Sports!

SLPN SPORTS - Panthers (2-2) @ Looters (3-1) PREVIEW
Robert Matthews: Here we are, sports fans! We’ve survived all the way to Week 5 in what’s proven to be a real bruiser of a season, here at SLPN Sports coverage of Louisiana State Football Division III. There have been hot streaks and there have been burn outs. Our focus this weekend will be on the hottest of the hot – a squad that defines the term, “Destiny’s Team.” They have seemed — by virtue of how they’ve come together over the season, shown grit when they had to and received grace when they needed it — ordained for the Bowl Game. I can only be talking about, of course, the Golden Meadow Tornadoes. Their performance as a complete unit has been no less than epic, all the way since they stomped this season’s number one spoiler—Columtreal’s Looters—in Week One. In the weeks that followed, their core of leading players, “The Golden Triangle” of Dan Stickler, Drake Lewis and Quarterback Bobby Stede have shown their squad to the winner spot, time and time, against awesome odds. Now we’ll see them take a major leap forward in the ranking, or fall from on high, as they travel to Baton Rogue. There the Tornadoes will clash with the once-unbeaten Sharpshooters. This is the one we’ve been waiting all season for, the true Clash of the Titans, and you’ll see it here live at 2pm. I’ll be joined by State Champion Defensive MVP Will ‘Tank’ McNamara, who will surely lend his colorful commentary on another crucial Sharpshooters game.
Tank McNamara: Nah, Rob. Nah. That dog won’t hunt. I got as ‘colorful’ as I’m going to get last week. It’s done. I’m over it. I’m moving on. Eyes are clear, heart’s full, and that means, I can’t lose.
RM: Unlike your Baton Rouge Sharpshooters, Tank. Who lost last week to a program in its first year.
TM: Woo. You do like rubbing it in. Salt the wound, Rob. Salt away. I admit, though, that I somewhat brought it on myself, banking on an unbeaten season for my alma mater. That was a rookie move as a sports journalist. You won’t see it out of me again.
RM: Now that the eyes are clear, how does it look for the Division’s destiny?
TM: Well, I don’t think it’s going to be decided in Baton Rouge. And that’s not just sour grapes. It’s because what I saw out of Columtreal last week suggests to me that Hathian’s football hopeful might have more than a dark horse to root for. They might have Bowl Game material.
RM: Another bold call from the Tank. What makes you say that?
TM: There’s a term in our business, Rob. “Intangible.” It means, a quality in a football player that you can’t measure with a scale or a stop watch. The Looters have that in spades. Now, you can say it’s because they come from a town of underdogs, or a town of outcasts, or a town of maniacs. You can blame it on whatever chip on their shoulder or thorn in their paw you want to. But those things only make fierce people, not fierce teams. Fierce teams are made from setting aside ego, dedicating very disparate people to a single goal, and getting them fired up together. Together. That's the operative word. Because Hathian might have a reputation for being a kennel of mad dogs, but--
RM: I don't think anyone on SLPN is saying that.
TM: --But it doesn't matter how big the fight in the dog is. All that counts is whether they can form a pack. And what we have in the Columtreal Looters is a case where people from very different, very intense backgrounds have shown solidarity that is unmatched on the field today. Even Golden Meadow doesn't have this kind of unit cohesion. What's more, they don't just have intangibles. They have tangibles, too! Mitch Yama - I still hate the guy's guts, personally, but he's the leader at the running back position in the areas we discussed last week: Yardage after contact and scores on the board. Seth Corbin's pitching a perfect season as a field goal kicker and lays out touchback after touchback. And we've yet to see the best out of some very good players like Hayden Grimm, Sergi Makarov, Leon Acosta, Scott Andel, Scott Samson and Vidarok Omizu. Omizu's about ten feet tall if he's an inch, and even with a single game as a starter under his belt, he was a game changer against the Sharpshooters. A lot of this is due to the excellent play and outstanding commitment of the guys - every single one of them. But a whole heck of a lot of credit goes to the captains on the squad, Quarterback Jason Keaton and Defensive Tackle Joshua Andrew-Parker. Keaton and the British Beast have done wonders bringing together folks that just about anybody would never think could get along.
RM: And yet now there are rumors of a new coach. Is this a shot in the arm for the team?
TM: Definitely a boost. Because this coach really ain't new per se. Columtreal's been playing without any true coach. They cobble it together, much like everything else on this squad. Now they'll have a battle-tested man at the helm. I can't see how this'll go south.
RM: We will see how far it goes, though. Looter versus Panthers will be playing on a highlight reel at 12pm SLT, at select locations in Black Bottom. A Cafe, I hear?
TM: That's right. Bleu Wag Bistro. And if I were in Hathian - heck, if I were anywhere within that ZIP code - that's where I'd be noon on Saturday.
